Old Town Albuquerque

📍 Albuquerque, New Mexico

When you think of New Mexico, what comes to mind?
Endless desert. The Wild West. Spanish colonization.

But what about the Civil War?

In 1861, the New Mexico Territory briefly fell under Confederate control after the Mesilla Secession Convention. By 1862, Union troops moved in to reclaim it, taking Albuquerque after a surprisingly quiet, almost bloodless confrontation.

The Confederate forces didn’t stay long. As they retreated south toward their final stand at Peralta, they left behind their sick and wounded.

According to local legend… they never left at all.

Some say those soldiers were buried beneath Old Town Plaza.
And at night, they’re still alive.

Figures in gray uniforms have been seen wandering the square.

Others claim to hear boots echoing across the brick.
A few have even reported soldiers on horseback appearing suddenly in the street, as if time folded in on itself.

I’ve done a lot of ghost tours in my time but none have left me quiet as rattled as the one I do in Old Town Albuquerque a few years ago. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was, but it definitely left a lasting impression….
